The term residentialists
is being resurrected by the press and others
for the 2014 Palo Alto City Council Election.
There is no declared Residentialist
faction or slate,
but various candidates are using residentialist
in talking about their positions.
However, there is no formal adoption of this term—since
I own the domain (and have offered its use), I would expect to be among the first to know.
Widely identified as residentialists (alphabetically):
Ones widely regarded as establishment/pro-development:
Repeatedly unsuccessful candidates
New to Palo Alto issues
Unknown to me
Withdrew
The term originated locally in the 1960s
for a political movement against the pro-growth establishment
that was seen by many residents as supporting the interests of developers and business
at the expense of residents,
and degrading their quality of life.
History:
If you know of more links to a good online history of this movement,
I would appreciate receiving them
(Doug Moran).
If the above doesn't answer your interest,
you can get bits and pieces by searching for residential
at Palo Alto Online.
Results include portions of news stories and obituaries of people active in the movement.
The Domain:
In 2005, I considered running for City Council (and decided against it).
I purchased this domain and its variants (singular/plural, .com/.org)
to ensure that it would be available should it become a useful name.
Because some influential people remembered the controversies of the 1960s
(If you remember the 60s, you weren't really there
—Unknown/various),
there was reluctance to resurrect the term.
