Painted Post / Corning NY Stories

Henry Houghton, the Bar Hopping Beagle of Corning NY

Small town atmosphere in 1960s (Nov 1964). The primary employer of the area was Corning Glass Works, which was run by the Houghton family, which was listed as one of the 100 wealthest in the US at the time. The dog, a beagle, would wander down the hill form the mansion to the bars on Market Street, which border the factories along the river. After bar hopping, it would get a taxi home. The original story in the local newspaper, the Corning Leader, got picked up and printed in many papers across the country. I haven't found the original, but some of those derived stories are now available on-line.
